went crabbing at LM on thursday am and got 5 keeper dungeness in 24-25 ft of water. paddle out and line yourself up perpendicular with the street lights on hwy 1, go out to 25-26 ft and drop your trap checking each 10-15 minutes. only pulled one rock crab which was nice for a change.

i use my old method of squid parts and 2 cans of tuna in oil (with small holes poked in the cans) crabs avg 6.5" across so better than legal.

it got windy so i quit.

Hi John:

What type of traps do you use?

                                            Thanks for the report

i just use the cheapo hook nets with a zip tied baitcage in the middle of it. i also suspend the lines underwater with a float so when i pull in the loot i dont flick any crabs off the lines. the float keept the 3 lines to the top hook taught so when it rests on the sea floor the crabs go between them instead of over them. looks like this:

apologies for the lack of pics, i usually take them but didnt have the camera with me and dropped them off at my parents house on the way home. right now my wife cant have shellfish because she is pregnant and i promised i would not eat any either just to keep it fair. we are just eating a little fish right now.

after the baby comes i should have a few more months of dungeness season so maybe i'll have some then.

the diagram is pretty simple, if you line up with the road there in a T you'll be away from the rocks enough that you should not get many rock crabs and the dungeness are there. any place where i drop a net for 15 minutes and get 2 legal dungeness on the first pull i consider a good spot. i even tried a 5 minute drop and still got one actually but when the wind started i figured i'd let it soak a little more.

please post if you have any success there, i'd offer waypoints but didnt have my handheld gps with me. its a real easy spot to get to and you can even drop several and just work them in a line.

good luck!

Great report and information, John.  Nice to hear someone else doing well on the shallow crabbing and really nice to see such an informative report and followup.   :smt001

launch the south side of the beach where its usually easy.

Yes, if you launch from the very left or south side.  It is the shortest path pass the breakers.  Right at the very corner of the cove near the houses.  Forgot how many houses are there.  But, it is at least 6 to 8 houses in.  I think?

It is very rocky there so watch out.  I would wear a helmet.  At low tide you can see all the rocks on the beach.  At high tide you can only see sand.  Coming in is sometimes hairy.  I use to come in near the creek because of the rock factor.

By the way good job on the Crabs.  You could try for sanddabs (used squid strips or cut up anchovies) or even surf perch with a sabiki.  When the salmon were running in there years ago.  I remember getting 4 and then 5 silver perch there.  Trying to jig up some fresh anchovies for bait for salmon mooching.

Nice work. Talked to a couple of guys the other day who had limits.  How was the quality.  The guys I spoke to had limits but the crab was filled with marks, broken claws, barnacles etc...
