Tis the season that the rockfish can not be chased so I must find other means to fish weather that be cast gulp worms into the surf or try to bring the rockfish in close to the rocks. I wanted to know if any body was down to join in for a day of surf fishing along the central Coast and maybe slay some nice surf perch in the pre spawn that should start in the next few weeks or so...
I have a wierd schedule so let me know what you available for and ill try and make it. I might give next week a try and might even give Big Sur a try...

Ryan, My wife and I try go down to Morro Bay It least once a month. I have a surf pole down there just waiting to get some use, I would also be into batrays or sharks in the bay. Will PM you when we head down.

I tentatively have plans for backpacking in Sur with PJ and the wives next week but I really need to wet a hook soon. What day/s did you have in mind?

FYI, the tide is going to suck bad for perchin' next week until late in the week. Same goes next week for yakin the channels in Morro unless you carry an anchor. AFAIK, leopards can only be caught from shore till May,

I would be down for some fishing next week. Wednesdays and Fridays are usually best for me, but let me know.

I was out in Morro Bay just paddling around Sunday and the tide was pretty bad, like littoral said, you would need an anchor.

Yep. Next week it's an outgoing tide from sun up to a low in the afternoon. Not good for perchin and it basically makes the bay into a river :smt012

Count me out of any yak-based action next week. Went down hard downhilling a section of rocky single track. Looks like a cheese grater hit the side of my leg from ankle to ass. Putting on a wetsuit would be out of the question.

Still up for perchin or any shore-based shenanigans late in the week though.

A question for anyone who cares to offer help.  I have been fishing the San Diego (Mission Beach) surf for about 5 months now and have had some good and some bad luck.

I've been having real difficulty finding sand crabs in the surf down here so I've been slinging a gulp sand worm on a carolina rig.

Took hydrospider out and learned that a slow retrieve works well down here.

My questions I guess are:

Does color matter?  I've been using the 2" sandworms in camo

Does the gulp pull in any other species?

Hydro caught a few Corbina when he visited but I've yet to pull any species except Barred and Walleye surfperch.

When the crabs are around I've pulled guitarfish, leopard sharks, the perch, and corbina with the crabs.

How big can I expect these perch might get?  The biggest I've pulled so far is 15 inches.

Anyway, any help at broadening my horizons would be huge.

Thanks

Nope, bike crash. Just a bit too fast on loose gravel over rock @ MdO.  Hope the rangers don't close the park to bikes, 'cause, you know, bikes are dangerous weapons or something.   :smt003

Still up for whatever this week.

Seems most of the keeper perch around here in SLO average 2 lbs. For the most part we get barred and calico perch , I don't think calicos get down to you in San Diego.

Regarding color: First, fishing gear is often a matter of faith. There are a lot of schools of thought on this but many perch slayers around here absolutely swear by the dark red "bloody sandworms". Keep in mind perch in San Diego might prefer something a little spicier.  :smt002

littoral,

thank you for the advice.  I don't know if "we" don't get them or if "I" don't get them but I've not seen any calico perch down here.  Mostly barred and walleye with the occasional rubber lip.  The barred are the larger ones down here.

A couple of the guys down here suggested camo color but i'd love to out fish them with the bright red (chili pepper) color. :smt003

Thanks again
