The scientist in that video, Zeb Hogan, is a former labmate of our own Jim "InSeine" Hobbs.  They both did their PhD's at UC Davis under Dr. Peter Moyle.  I think Jim went down the wrong path studying otolith mircochemistry and should have studied giant fish around the world like Zeb. What a cool job that would be travelling and catching Taimen, giant catfish, giant strugeon, etc. for science.

Very cool story, thanks for posting.  Here's to hoping they don't go the way of the dinosaur.

On a side note, it was clear to me that the narrator didn't have a background in fishing as indicated by this quote, "Conservationists advocate catch-and-release fishing, as opposed to the kind that kills the fish."

No kidding, what a way to spend the day! Somehow I think if you're adorned with a name like Zeb, you're destined to do something out-of-the-box!

True that, it would be more than a shame to lose those beasts. I certainly wouldn't helping out by making a trip over there to C&R a few - some day...  I vaguely recall James Prosek mentioning the taimen in Fly-Fishing the 41st. Otherwise, this was the first I'd really heard about them.

:smt001 I noticed that, too. It's probably best he put it that way so even the least-informed viewer can understand what they're doing.

Very cool, thanks for sharing.  Now I have to add Mongolia to my list of places to go.

Totally cool stuff.  Old-growth trout.  Zeb's description of a fish in a pool for 50 years reminded me of big abs that I leave and come back to.  Harvest "and they're gone..."
