My day job is to study the science of addiction. On more than one occasion I have been struck by the similarities between what I read about addiction and what I read on here! To try and stave off the withdrawal pangs I've been feeling since rockfish closed, I wrote an essay about it.

A few of you feature, tho' I've refrained from naming you (in any case I don't actually know most of your names!). I'm sure it will sound very familiar.

All thoughts and comments appreciated, especially if you have similar stories of fishing addiction. I'm sure many of you do. Feel free to post them on the site.

Cool essay Phil! I am certainly addicted to fishing but was forced into withdrawal due to not having a job/funds. It has been painful but hopefully that will change soon.

Happy new year!

Kool Essay Northern Boy,

 Thanks,

When I get asked by the guys around the Firehouse if I have been out Fishing,

 It's always the same answer,

" Not as much as I like, But more than Most....  "

That last bit always reminds me how lucky I am......... :smt003

Thanks for sharing the essay Phil. I have been addicted as well since I was ten
years old. I would even ride my bike during school nights for a couple of hours
just to wet my line. All the weekends, forget it, you know where to find me. The
only time that I was absent from fishing was when I got introduced to GOLF. Golf
took seven solid years not touching my fishing gears. Now, that was another
addiction I couldn't over come till I bought another house and was forced to give
it up. Too costly so I am back to fishing. Then came this kayak fishing. Now I am
back to square one where I am learning new things, asking bunch of people for
help, constantly looking for hook up and fishing report. ANOTHER ADDICTION I
supposed but, I LOVE IT! There goes my 2 cents about it.

Excellent piece, Phil - thanks for sharing it.  For me fishing has always been a great activity for relaxation and connection with nature, but I've never felt addicted.  With NCKA though came a feeling of obsession in pursuing the fun, hooking up with cool folks, and creating entertaining reports - these components of the madness do seem like an addiction, but it's hard to classify something as an addiction when it feels so good for you!  It's more of a lifestyle.   :smt001

Great read Phil.
I am definitely not addicted to fishing.
KAYAK fishing may be a different story.
Although I may not be addicted by definition, I do not believe I did any other kind of fishing in all of '08 except from my kayak.
Maybe it is the comfy seat.  :smt003  All I know is that I would not fish as much as I did in '08 if it weren't for my kayak.
