I take my GPS on most of my outdoor activities (mountain biking, Yak Fishing, PB Fishing, Hiking, etc . . )

I would like to load some maps onto it, but am not sure which would serve me the best.  Here are the three things I would like to have installed on the unit:

Road Map -  Out of the box it only has highways loaded onto it. I would like to have a more detailed road map, but I don't really need navigation.

Mountain trails for hiking and biking - I was surprised that my buddies iphone had most of the trails listed and named the last time we biked Mt. Tam.

Marine Charts - knowing something about the underwater topography would also be a plus -especially for going to new locations.

Garmin does offer maps that individually cover these but are quite pricey and may be more sophisticated than what I need. I am hoping there is one general map that may work.

Does anyone have any maps loaded on their GPS, and if so how do you like them?

Thanks,

Jason

Many other people agree. One of them actually did something about it and compiled every 7.5 minute quad map for the entire state. Free topo for the entire state of CA including roads, trails, 20' contours, and bathymetric data.  You need a copy of the  MapSource program to load this on your unit. There is a link on that page for a free copy of MapSource but I my unit came with a copy so I don't have any experience with that method.

The Garmin Blue Chart has some nice features like having the MLPA areas marked but the bottom detail is not as good as the fish-and-go maps. Garmin Topo has roads but they are not nearly as accurate as the City Navigator maps. In addition, the 60 CSX can only read one map on per SD card, so if you use topo and blue chart you have to install on separate cards and switch them out. My last beef is the Garmin map unlock process which is totally stuuuupid. I do really like the 60 CSX but for street navigation it will not replace my Garmin IQue.

That sparked an idea. PJ and I already have most of the MPAs marked for SLO and Big Sur. These could easily be uploaded to this site in a generic GPS file type like .gpx or a text file for sharing with others.
