eel river around garberville?

I'm going up to visit some friends near garberville for new years and wanted to try for some steelhead. this is a non -yak trip and I've never fished the area, so any advice on places to go would be awesome. I'll be heading up on tuesday and will hopefully fish new years eve morning and probably the second, the first will be health permitting 

All the local rivers are blown out and will be for some time.

is it not worth trying at all then?

It's very unlikely that the South Fork will have any visibility at all by the 1st or 2nd.  Leggett has had a few inches in the last 36 hours and the temperature has risen significantly, melting all or much of the snow that had accumulated in the hills all around that area and on down the South Fork.  Sight-seeing may be your best bet, fishloomis.
