A lot of times when you see them horizontally distributed in a band at the same depth its a thermocline, and not fish.  I have spent many hours trying, but I still have never caught one.

This was in Montezuma Slough. I was thinking more like salmon given the nice turn out and drop from 13 feet all around to a nice deep hole.
They were consistant in this one spot.

Yes I have had that happen, thing is, I read online in an article that its better to lose the fish screen and run the sonar screen with the arches, then, turn the noise filter on high and the sensitivity down to 85%.  This usually does the trick for me.

One afternoon while paddling around bayfarm ferry where all the clam beds and trough's are I noticed a huge arch on my finder half way on the screen.  While my eyes were glued to the screen a huge sturgeon erupted straight out of the water 5' off the left side of my kayak.  I've never went back to the fish screen.

One other thing, salmon wont show up on fishfinders unless you have one of the super expensive units and its dialed in just perfect.  I read an article about it on coastside one time.

So then, just curious, how did you have your finder set up when it was reading those fish??  JTF

I see that on the North side of Vinegar Point in Lake Mendo all the time, but the "fish" are usually on the bottom.

Yeah, this one spot at Del Valle by the big rock has always suckered me into trying something new every time I go there.  So far I have tried; worms, minnows, dough bait, power bait, plastic worms, squid, and little jigs...  Don't think I even had a nibble.  I hate that rock now...

Had it happen at Berryessa. I think if you stick your head in the water you'll hear snoring. Little fishy snoring...
