I did have a few casts at high tide in santa cruz with a grub this morning.

there are some little fish way out there and I landed one before going back to vegetable prep.

yep, no kayak, but surf perching is a relaxing option for when rockfish season is over...

poke poling is good if you are looking to actually eat something.

I guess I like the casting that goes with the perching.

I caught another dinker today, sigh. well, I guess it keeps the reflexes sharp.

yesterday I used a berkeley 9' steelhead casting rod ($40) and conventional abu with level wind removed. I did lose two weights to mild backlashes on the 30lb braid.

today a 10.5' fenwick HMX IM7 graphite rod ($100) with spinning reel. this is not as retro and cool as the other combo, but quite frankly is a far more forgiving and better setup. these rods are still available at www.ffo-tackle.com. this is about the very best perching rod I have tried so far.  a cannon. yet light and sensitive.

You sure have a way to find the good deals on fishing rods. But watch out with those guides. They won't last and it will fray your line if they wear out.

yep, compa, if I replace them, I will go with some fancy ceramics. the blank and handle are sweet on that fenwick.

btw, a rod you fixed up for me went the whole season as my second kayak rockfish rod and caught plenty fish and the basic hardloy ceramic guides still look great on that thing! it feels good to catch fish on top of the line equipment like my kunz rod, but it is also fun to catch fish on the customized-by-friends cheapie equipment,  :smt005.

So a couple guys came to the beach today to perch fish, they had all the best equipment (waders, sunglasses, the lookd like fly fishermen they were so decked out) and lures, camo gulp sandworms, etc and said that they caught some good fish here last weekend, exactly where I caught the dinks. I did not stick around to see how they did today. So maybe I just did not fish long or hard enough or was not lucky enough or I need to try the gulp and not just the kalin motor oil grubs.

point tho, is that the perching can be good right now it appears.
