My friend Tommy inherited an 18 ft foot crestliner and the F-150  to pull it with.  So last Saturday we take it out the mouth at Noyo harbor (Pics 1, 2, 3).  Our plan is to soak some crab pots, anchor up the boat and paddle our boards across the bay to a little used surf spot called Chicken Point (Pic 4).

I've only surfed the spot one time before, years ago, and now I remember why I stopped going out there.  The place is a mess of rocks and the takeoffs are scary.  I kept thinking that my wife was gonna kill me if I demolished the dental work I just paid a fortune for.  Anyway, no worries around here if you want to surf this "secret spot."  It's all yours.

The good part is that we caught a mess of crabs, about 18 all together, a mix of rock and dungies. The pots only soaked about 1.5 hours. Right outside the harbor mouth so it's really doable with a kayak.  I've got to say that the 18 ft boat spoiled me, though.  If I could only get him to go out there without surfing the point.

I forgot to take pictures of the crabs.

Thanks for the report. I have never heard of this spot before. Is it "boat in only" or is there a shore access paddle out spot? Also how big were the waves and how long were the rides. If you and your friend ever need a partner to surf on the sonoma coast shoot me a p.m. I like seeking out and surfing spots off the beaten path...and I know a few...jim/redyak :surf   I get up to mendo coast some, probably more now that gas is 1.85 a gal.

Thanks for the report!!!

Just yesterday I was thinking about doing a trip similar to this.  Surfing would be perfect to pass the time as crab pots soak especially with the little fishing opprotunities in the ocean.

I thought  Bolinas or Linda Mar may be potential spots.  I've never surfed much along the Sonoma or Mendo coast.

Thanks again,

Jason

I have always looked at Chicken point but, never surfed it. It is sure a nice looking wave if you can get used to all the rocks. A friend of mine, when I was at College of the Redwoods used to climb down the cliff. That was over 20 years ago and the trail probably changed a bit :smt002.
On a side note right under that spot is the largest anchor I have ever seen. It is totally encrusted with life but once you figure out why something seems out of place you can see the shape of the anchor and even swim under it. (The abs are decent there but no trophies)

Sean,

I'd go this weekend.  It's gonna be too big to dive or fish (I think), but it may be OK for crabs.  It's pretty calm on the north side.  Maybe?

Jim,

Seriously, you don't want to come all the way up here to surf that spot.  It takes a bigger swell and it's infested with rocks - and right now some serious old growth kelp.  It's like taking off in ropes.  We've got much more better spots that I'd be happy show you if you're in the neighborhood.

For instance, the next day we surfed wages creek in A- conditions.  There were barrels.  Here's a few pics of last sunday.  It was really fun.  The six guys out there are about half of all the locals up here.  The locs are pretty friendly too.

Craig, thanks for the compliment, but Tommy's 18 ft boat made it easy.  No real thing on my part.

Think we can dive this weekend?

Thanks for the pics of wages going off. I've surfed and camped there many times but never seen it break that good before. You definitely scored!   jim/redyak

Nice work Dave,

Any good spearfishing spots around the mouth where you were crabbing?  I'd be into that if we get a weather window that's conducive soon.....

PM me about tomorrow or give me a call

Late,

Norm
