And they seem to think it might be fun to target threshers, you know, just to breakup the boredom of winter. So anyway, these idiots wanted me to ask you guys how you might target these fish, assuming you were ever that bored and stupid?

Nothing wrong with targeting Threshers - I've witnessed Mike / sturgy catch one on Salmon Tackle a few years back in Linda Mar. They are known for their long runs and lot's of "air shows" in between. Jeff Krieger form So Cal wrote a great article on it....I'll try looking for it and post it when I get a chance.

Bill and I encountered ONE BIG one at Bean Hollow about two years ago. It was tail slapping some bait fish just about 30 feet from where we were rock fishing :smt118

Spray your hull with Pam, paddle silently using Ninja strokes with a carbon fiber paddle, sneak up on them on the surface and grab em by the tail with your Kung Fu grip. When he flips around to bite you, get him in a leg lock.

Or slow troll a sardine with a little weight and a long tough leader till your arms fall off. That works too.
Always willing to join others in the Monterey/Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay area for a bit of fishing...feel free to contact me.

A few specifics/techniques?  Top water? Mid water? Live? FBR? Dodger?

PJ bagged his on on the bottom with swimbait but I have to believe that that was a freak by-catch incident and that Fish and Game would probably frown on that technique this time of year.

Thresher fishing was all the rage in so-cal a few years ago. Mooch is right, Jeff Krieger was the man with the info. I only know they trolled big rapalas and live mackerel for them, and the sharks were often tail hooked.
I think the real info needed is what the heck to do with them once you tire them out & get them boastside.

Randomness rules the universe. Perseverance is the only path to success..but luck sometimes works too.

Totally inaccurate...everyone knows that ninja propel their kayaks using ki power alone, not paddles.  :smt005

I think we more or less have that part managed, depending on the size of the fish :smt003 And the experience gave us tons of new ideas to try out next time.
