i am trying to build a sturgeon snare.
i've got everything except one part.
i believe the part that i am having a hard time finding is called a "line tightener."
what is it for?  where can i get it from?  is it available at West Marine?
any info is appreciated.

I got mine at Ace hardware. I think it was called a clothes line tightener.

I got mine here - http://www.thehardwarecity.com/?sku=7728710

Not really worth it unless you need more than this from the store since shipping gets a little silly.

They generally have them at Home Depot... usually right next to where the clothes line stuff is located.

I'd be surprised if the Home Despot didn't have them, but it doesn't surprise me in the least that they were unable to help you. I hate that place with a passion due to their poor customer service. You damn near have to chase them through the aisles and tackle them down to ask a question and once you finally corner them they don't know the answer anyhow.  :smt013

I'm happy to go to my local ace hardware and pay about 10% more on average. Each time I walk through the door they have a person standing  there asking what they can help you find, and they actually take to to the aisle, find exactly what you came in looking for, and make sure you know what to do with each and every thing you buy.

Whew! I lost my mind there for a second! I'm OK now, just breathe.... breathe.... breathe....  :smt044

Home Depot does carry these, you must not be looking in the right section.  I purchase them regularly since we use them to tighten the bottom line on the volleyball nets here at the college.  Look in the section where they sell rope and chain and all the related items (pulleys, swaging tools, sleeve and thimble kits, et cetera).

I noticed Walmart carries the line tensioners - about $2.50 or so.

I don't advocate shopping at "Wally World" but they're kind of a novelty to me so I stopped into the one in Windsor today after leaving my mom's place. Fortunately, it was nothing like some of the craziness that apparently happens at those places http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081129/ap_on_re_us/wal_mart_death_11:smt011

Anyway, the tensioners were near the outdoor section next to some all-purpose poly line. Just another option if you have a Walmart nearby. I don't think the sturgeon will care where you got the part...

FindThatFish, I know you already bought the PVC. That is an older picture of the Kunz's snare. If you use 1" width PVC, you won't have to bother carving a hole in an end cap. Just fit the tensioner into the PVC and, like the Kunz says, it will "fit in the end like butter." It does.

all:  thanks for the info.

hojoman:  it seemed 1-1/4" PVC was a little too thick for me, so i bought a 1" PVC instead.  i guess i've made the right choice.   :smt001  thanks.

I'd also make it longer... I made my current snare 46 inches long and it seems to be a good useable length... also doubles as a measure for the lower slot limit.

Looks like I've been having trouble with some of the local stores here in Sac.  None of the Home Depot nor Ace Hardware has them.  I'd even tried Amy's Hardware too.  Looks as if I should have order on-line and save some gas.... :smt005
