A buddy just gave me 4 crab pots with buoys and rope.
I have never crabbed before and wouldn't know how to start especially on a Yak, but with the dwindling rockfish opportunities, I thought it would be a good way to feed the family on the slow fishing days and maybe on occassion have a double header. I live bout 1/2 mile from new brightn and frequent the santa cruz harbor area for most of my fishing.

Is the crabbing any good in these areas? and would anyone like to teach me and possibly buddy up, I would be willing to split up my gear and share the catch for anyone that would like to go out and set the traps, fish for the day and maybe go back the next day, pick up the crab and fish some more.

Any ideas?

Stoggie

Go to the article section on this site and look up "Crabbing from a kayak" by ChuckE.  The article covers all the basics and will turn you into a pro in no time.  May all your crabs be desired.

What type of pots did you get?, how much line on them? for rock crabs generally 30-60' of water outside kelp lines can be good. Rock Crab make great crab cakes. For dungies you will need 125' to 150' of line. Depending on the traps you will have to weight them so they don't drift off on you. A gps is essential in marking your pot so you can get back to pick it up. Generally I like to leave them soak for 2 days so you have a chance for a good pick.

The pots are metal square foldable type roughly 3'x2'x2' it looks like they will be easy to transport on a yak all folded up. He gave me 4 with buoys and some rope. I will probably get more nylon rope and some weights.

Can't wait to see how this works, my wife loves crab cakes and makes some of the best ones I have tasted in a long time.

gonna hook up with some buds to help and share the goodies.
Already recruited Fishmaster 1 to go out when it opens in Nov.

Another trick for this old dog to learn.

I'll read all the posts here to learn what I can.

Thanks
Stoggie

i like going crabbing.  i usually go to pier and do crabbing with crab snares.  it's fun.  never done from a kayak though.  how many lines of crab pots are allowed per person from a yak anyway?

You can have as many pots as you want. The limit per day is 10 dungeness caught on a kayak or private boat. If you go on a party boat it's 6 per person.
