You guys must get tired of some of these questions, but here goes..

I just got a brand new Cobra F&D  as a retirement gift and a Cuda 250 sonar/w maps FF.  I have the idea on the transducer, made my `new school power supply, and now I can't decide where to mount the darn screen!  Out on the deck in front of me seems almost too far to see or reach; then up close on the round hatch seems waaay too close.  Has anyone mounted theirs on the rectangular hatch?  Any insight as to where to mount the thing would be appreciated.

"Way too close" is anywhere it will get knocked by anything, except very rarely.
" Too far away" is where you can't read it ,at least the important stuff, or reach it even if you scoot up a little.
But you probably already guessed that.

there are couple of things to consider when it comes to installing a FF:
1.  close enough to read the screen.
2.  keep the unit from getting knocked off by either paddle or you when getting on and off kayak

the best solution to this is to test drive your kayak on the water (before installation) to determine the appropriate location for FF.  make sure the desired FF screen location has a enough clearance space for you to make an easy and safe access on and off the yak.  make sure of the enough space for paddling, too.  spend 1 or 2hrs on your yak and see where you want to install the FF.  you will figure it out in no time.

good luck.

The link above is from a report I posted yesterday, in one of the pics you can see my Cuda FF installed on the center hatch (of a Maurader) , the little white wood piece used to be mounted just in front of the round hatch on my old Explorer hence the curved edge.  As for where the wires come up, I usually have a rubber gromet that seals out water but that day I left it off.  to improve the install I may move the thing a little farther forward and bring the wires up thru the deck just in front of the hatch. But even as it is now I can get in and out of the yak without a problem. (ab diving).

Heres Bluefin17's FF mounted in front of his hatch.

I used a mini-ram adjustable mount on the front right side. Far enough forward so my feet clear when swinging them over the side.
