Well the drag that pulls up your lure off the bottom is a function of the surface area of the line and lure and weight and density of the lure.

the surface area of the line is a function of diameter.

Physics is physics. cold fusion notwithstanding,  :smt002

so... It will make a difference even if it is not empirically obvious.

That said, the smaller the line, the shallower the water, the less total affect it has on the whole equation and there might not be a heck of a lot of difference from 30lb to 40lb braid in 60 feet of water.

But, if you are not breaking that line, why go heavier?

John,

Note that I said no functional difference. If the angle from vertical is 25 degrees with 20 lb test, and 30 degrees with 50 lb test, then what real gain do you get with the lighter line? For most folks, some sort of change would have to be made. Shallower water, sleeker lure, wind sock, cast down drift, etc...

I spend as much time fishing 60-90 feet as I do 40-60 feet. 120-150 feet up in AK.

I break off about 1/3 as often due to snags. No fish, anywhere, has rocked me since switching from 20/30 braid over to 50/65 braid.

I actually put 15lb braid on my backup rig. cause I want to fish a 2oz leadhead in 90 feet! we'll see how it goes.

I have some 60lb hollowcore on one reel, some 65lb solid on another, and some 40lb solid on another, so eventually I'll probably try it all!

you might check out the daiwa metered braid on sale at charkbait, they sell it in 55lb weights, kind of an interesting option. I really like the cabelas metered braid for freshwater trolling.
