4 mile beach, Sunday 9/7

Going to give 4 mile Beach another go this Sunday with Slowmo and Fuzzy Tom, company welcome .
This is my favorite beach/surf break in all of Santa Cruz, but has yet to produce fish (at least for me and Slowmo ) and it sure seems like it should. We gave this spot a couple of tries last year including one being a long drift from four mile into Mitchell's Cove with Tall Paul providing the shuttle vehicle. If you have not been there  it's a beautiful spot well worth checking out, think West Cliff without the houses. Wheels are a must with a good hike in (1/3 of a mile +?).

 Four mile Beach is 4 miles from the stop light at Western Dr. & Mission Blvd (highway 1 heading north). I will arrive by 6:30 and drive a white Ford van with kayak trailer if you don't know the spot and need a marker.

I was thinking that may be a good launch for flatties this time of year. They seem to have moved up that way or the weather and bait situation is better there now. I'll have to wait and see how Saturday goes. Thanks for putting the idea out.

Seems like an area that we could find most anything and it's a nice change from the usual spots. A bit more of an adventure flavor if it's not the usual spot.

I've caught a ling and a verm and blacks and blues there. the reef out off 3-mile in about 60-70 seems best, or right in the kelp off 3 mile. I've caught shiner perch and anchovies on a sabiki right next to the surf lineup, at the edge of the kelp. in the 3-mile kelp are a lot of smelt.

brendan says there's a reef straight out in 85 feet, but I haven't found it. party boats hit the reef off 3-mile regularly. close in, like 60 feet of water.

I see guys drift that beach for halibut a lot when I surf it and I have tried myself, but not scored.

there are a lot of harbor seals and they follow you around.

NOW is the time of year for 4-Mile flatties.  60 FOW right off the middle of the beach.  Good luck!!

John and Allen, thank you for taking the time to provide some intel, it is appreciated. I have not seen another kayak  fishing out in that area when I have been out, but knew that others must have tried it. Usually a few PBs in the area and they have always been friendly and chatty.

I have actually fished it on a slow day out of the harbor. I just kept going up the coast and then lookded at the coast and saw I was six+ miles from the harbor. The breeze made it an easy paddle back. I can't say I did well, but I did have a good workout. It looks like my wife is out for the day on Sunday which leaves me taking care of the dogs. Looks like I will miss this one.

I'd love to go but i don't have a ride, does anyone have space for me and my yak??? i've never done 4-mile but always thought it would be ideal. i live in the seabright neighborhood a few blocks from the harbor, let me know if we can arrange something.
