Why Baker!? Wouldn't you be less likely to die launching at Crissy Field?

(One day) I had considered launching at Baker on the outgoing and then drifting out to Pt Bonita for rockies and butts, then drifting back on the incoming.

because the heavy surf on the south side of the bridge is something you want to avoid
if you come in on the south side you have to take it wide allmost in the middle of the Chanel to avoid the big waves
the north side is allot better you do have to cross the Chanel but it is much safer.

Have you looked at baker beach in the city not fort baker this way you will not have to cross the golden gate . The current there is ripping in and out all most all the time. I have freinds that take crab pots out on long boards and do fairly well. Just a thought. If you do this be safe and have a story to tell.

                                                               Good luck Jim Ricker

Duane,
I just looked at my tidelog....max ebb 3.7 knts @ 7am. The crossing my be a bit iffy around 7. i know you 2 are strong paddlers, so im not too worried. Slack is at 10:30 followed by max flood @ 1:15.
Its that nearly 4 knot ebb that can be scary under the gate, even on a PB. The water/hydrodynamics do wired things there. It seems to have pockets of "low pressure" with reduced bouyancy...plain talk...it swallows things.
Watch out for bridge jumpers. it happens more often than you would think. Ive seen it happen. that would suck.
now, enough nay saying from me. Its totally doable, just a heads up on that ebb...

An excellent point. Good luck! I was trying to think of a way to get the yak to Bakers having also heard good things. My conclusion was it isn't really possible. I hadn't reckoned on insaneduane!

I am thinking about launching from baker beach, but I think I will check it out first.
with a full load of live bait + everything that I have to carry last thing I need is dicey launch
I was thinking china beach would be good to so we will get there Early to see whats up
china looks kinda sheltered so maybe will hit that.

Absolutely zero yak experience here , so my 2 cents worth is probably not worth even that ! However I think I would try the small beaches between Ft. Baker and Pt. Bonita for halibut and hit Bonita for some rockies . I've fished there on PB's and my small boat and would guess there is better or safer fishing on that north side of the gate , never even seen a PB south of the gate on your posted route . If you  should try the north side try to get as close to shore as you safely can and toss towards the breakers .

Where ever you make it to , be safe and good luck !

China Beach looks like a nice place to launch.  You can drive your yaks down the service road and back up if the gate is open.  Here are some pictures I took while scouting for fun spots to launch in SF.

Here are pictures of Baker Beach.  Some areas of the beach have funky surf breaks.  Have fun and be safe!
