I'm making it a three day weekend and heading up to Shelter Cove.  This place is awesome.  It's a far drive, but well worth it in my opinion.  Company welcome.

Peace, Sean

I'm heading to Bear Harbor for the weekend.  It's a bit south of the Cove.  Land of huge abs and isolated fishing opportunities as well as an awesome launch .3 miles down a nice and relatively level trail from the truck.  Call me at home if you want to cruise 1 hour from the Cove for a rare kayak adventure.  (707) 733-5340.  Eric.

Hi Eric,
What are the road conditions between the Cove and Bear Harbor?  Can a VW Jetta make it?
Cheers, Sean

Yo, Blond-mon.  The road is a piece of cake.  Definite 2 wheel drive access.  It's a beautiful drive from the Cove to Bear Harbor.  There are two ways to access Sinkyone Wilderness State Park (Bear Harbor is one of the POI there).  Go up the big hill out of the Cove and shortly after the crest at King Range road will be the turnoff to the south for Chemise Mtn. road.  Take this for about 20 minutes to "4 Corners" where you can continue straight on Usal road, go left on Whitethorn road, or go right into Sinkyone--go right!  This is a narrow, winding road that takes about 15 minutes to get you down to the visitor's center at Needle Rock.  Pay a day use fee there and continue about 15 more minutes to Bear Harbor--there's only one road throughout Sinkyone, so it's hard to get lost.  Once at the Bear Harbor parking lot you'll see many cars/trucks belonging to backpackers, campers, and day-users.  There are several camp sites both near the parking lot and along the .3 mile pretty flat trail to the beach.  I hope to score one of the prime campsites all the way down at the Harbor near the beach--it's only an easy 5 minute walk along a creek (very well established trail--we take a wheelbarrow with tons of stuff...).  I have a blue Chevy Silverado, a blue Scrambler XT, a red Mainstream tandem, two little squirts and a wife!  I'm heading out this morning and coming back Sunday.  I'm from Eureka area, but went to school at Davis.  The second way to Sinkyone (actually to 4 Corners) is as you are driving to Shelter Cove--take the Whitethorn road turnoff, go through Whitethorn and up the upper Mattole to 4 Corners--this is a better road than Chemise Mtn. road and takes about 15 minutes from Shelter Cove road to 4 Corners.  Hope you can make it.  If you want to camp with/near us you're welcome to.

OK Eric, I'll try to catch up with you on Saturday.  I am camping at one of the campgrounds on Chamise Mountain Rd. by the Cove with a couple of friends.  I'm heading out Friday after work and getting there pretty late that night.  I'll try and get over to Bear Harbor Sat. am.

Later,
Sean

I'll be on the water at daybreak to catch the minus tide, but I'll be ready for Yak-adventure any time during the day (my wife wouldn't agree!).  Look forward to meeting another yak-fisher-enviro-freak!
