Hi, I,m a newbie to saltwater and Butts so if anyone has any suggestions or wants to teach I am all ears. I checked and it will be a incoming tide with low at 5:44 and high at 12:29 hopefully before the sheep come out. I will be launching around 7:00 and will be in a camo Tarpon 140 on channel 69 . Any info for bait would help and is it necessary to have a gaff or a large net with a whacker?

Hey Carl,
I might join you - I have frozen herring but will bring a sabiki to hopefully catch some smelt or shiners...Do you have a sabiki rig? You can pick them up at any tackle shop...they have 5 little feathered hooks and are ideal for catching baitfish.
Maybe see you there around 7.

May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

by law you must have a net with an 18" opening, also only one rod at a time, no more than 3 hooks; so you must clip 2 hooks (if it has 5 hooks) off your sabiki.

heres a map for bait at ARW. actually its EVERYWHERE right now. bring a sabiki with no 14 hooks and tip em with bait (tiny pieces of squid, the very end of the tentacle, any uncooked shrimp, black mussel, even a little chovie, if you can get it to stay on the hook). troll it with a heavy sinker (6 to 14 oz, this sounds HEAVY, but it will troll more vertically, keeping it in the zone)on you way out, or while resetting a drift. troll it with the first fly 3-5ft below the water. also jig it with a .5 oz sinker when you see em.
Bring a gaff,or at least a decent sized net. See my map on my recent ARW report for the kill zone. for live bait i used a 1.5 on sliding egg sinker above a swivel with a 1.5-2ft leader(25lb test). no 2 light wire ringed live bait hook.many use a 3 way dropper setup which has the advantage of being able to swap out weights as necessary. top of the tide to early outgo is primetime.

wow thanks for the info on the live bait sharky.  I will be in alameda while my wife is at a test on saturday for a few hours so i think i'll go hike the ARW and play with the live bait.  Never know if I might get lucky and hook up a butt.

i will be there at 7.  i am a newbie as well and don't think i have any sabiki rigs.  i am gonna have to check with sports authority before they close tonight.  i have just installed a ff on my kayak and don't really know how to read it properly.  hopefully someone can help me with it.
cheers.

Thanks for all the info guys. I will be there around 7 or so with a friend from work. Sounds like NCKA crew will have a good showing so lets knock them dead.
