Gang,

My buddy went to Alaska & fished for everthing under the sun, he sent me some pics, I thought 1 of which you would all want to see.  A 50lb LING!!!!!

I don't know if this is unethical HiJack posting (if it is please feel free to clip me) but I figured this shot was too good to keep to myself.  He's about 5'8".

Enjoy!

Wow - that's a fattie! Ethics go out the window when it comes to 50lb lings!
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

HUGE!!  That ling is a monster, plus: there's enough fish on the deck of that boat to feed a small army!  Imagine hooking into that from a yak...

Oh to catch that on a yak. I wonder how much the air freight will cost him to get his catch home?

In that old photo there is something I would like to know. Just what is in that jug by the bow of the boat? HAHA. I saw some monster lings like that a few years ago in Seward , Alaska. Wouldn't you know we couldnt get on a boat for a week. Rael nice pic of that ling with you pal! AWesome!

Maybe we need to start wearing real fishing outfits - waistcoat, white shirt, bowler hat.
Is that a hand-line winder in the other guy's hand?  The jug probably weighs 10 lbs without whatever was in it.  A big glass bottle (do they call those 'carboys'?) wrapped in wicker to keep it from breaking.  Nalgene probably wasn't available then.

I'm not sure what's in the jug, but I could make a good guess.  As near as I can figure, these guys were fishing the dory in the same area as the Elk yak fish competiton.  Dory fishing fleets were common on the north coast then. And yes that's a handline.  Sorry about the hijack of the hijack.

I keep some track of that - for kayaks, and for people who participate in boards like this or who I know from elsewhere.  Timojam has the biggest lingcod I've heard of caught from a yak in NorCal.  45" and 30 pounds 6 ounces from Trinidad very recently.  I have a good friend, Brian, who caught a 28 pounder at the Cape with me several years ago, and his cousin Tom got a 24 that day.  I've had several 23 and 24's.  I know there was a young man who won the Half Moon Bay tournee a few years back with a 28 I believe.

Anything over 20 pounds is Lingzilla class.  Over 30 pounds...  we need a new name!  "Yao Ling"?    :smt003

LMAO. I've always liked "King of the Lingers". Tho' I guess that's the catcher not the catch.
