Alameda Marina Striper

Hi all,
 
           although I haven't posted for awhile as my daughter has kept us rather busy with Lacrosse tournaments for the summer;  I have been living vicariously through all of you and the incredible fishing you have been up to.

We have also recently bought a sailboat that we keep down in Alameda, on the estuary and have spent lots of time down there sailing with the family. Anyway..... this brings me to the reason for this post.  While spending time at the boat and showing my son how to catch baitfish from the dock with a hand line and some mussel for bait, I decided to drop a live one in the water just for fun. And oh what fun that turned out to be......

While Rayne(my son) kept himself busy with hand lining for baitfish, I hooked one up to a striper rig and let it swim right off the dock.  It probably took all of 10min before the clutch screeched and the fight was on.  The fish took off directly under the dock on which I was standing on and kept running until I was sure it had run right out at the other end.  With no room to manouver(yachts docked on all sides of me) - it was pretty much a waiting game as I held the fish hoping that it had not run the line around the dock piling or the keel of one of the boats.

After a good couple minutes, by which time a crowd had gathered - I could feel a little give in the line so I started cranking hard.  Slowly but surely I made headway until finally the fish emerged from under the dock.  You can imagine my surprise when I saw the silver flash of a beautiful striper.

I know this is a kayaking forum and fish caught should be from that platform, but I just needed to share this moment with you guys!

        Nice Story, and keep them coming. Your story reminded me of my Dad taking me to fish for bait using, a bent needle and thread.

Nice striper, Thank you for posting.

I work at Marina Village parkway and take walk on the estuary all the time but did not know that there are striper in the area. Definitely, I will try at the lunchtime.

A good fish story is always welcome here regardless if it's from a kayak, sailboat, or dock.

A majority of Alameda fishing reports come from the Rockwall, but the Alameda/Oakland Estuary can be good for big stripers especially around the Fruitvale, Park, and High Street Bridges.  You've got my interest for sure.  Thanks for the report and sharing the pics!

That's a nice striper!  Who needs a boat or yak when you can catch fish from the dock.  Thanks for the report.

Stripers are fun to catch, no matter what platform fished from.

Thanks Danglin.........  LOL   Don't think we have not been racking our brains trying to figure that out, only problem is, the yaks are almost bigger than the boat
