It was great.  He had a little light weight trout rod and we thought he was just horsing around.  The kids are like 8 and 10 and the caught over 100 anchovies and when Nate hooked the salmon we thought maybe he had a smelt or something like that.  We were all pretty surprised to see a salmon.  We would put the bait right into an ice and salt water slush and then at the end of the day roll them in saran wrap and freeze them for next time.  I think it made all the difference in the world to have fresh bait like that.

Hobi: have you tried your trap in salt water?  Did it work?  What's the biggest fish you trapped?

There seems to be lots of different versions.  What does everyone use for what type of baitfish?

I am pretty much focused on the coastline from Marin to Menocino counties.

I have found that the smallest of sabiki are the best all around option. You can get the little pin head chovie and the larger baits will still hit. If you go bigger you can get other bycatch, but the small chovies won't always hit.  For those minnow traps I have had the best luck when the dog or cat food is fish based. I assume more oils?
