They could rename Carmel Bay Stillwater Bay today.  Even when the wind came "up" it was only about 5 mph.  However, very smoky.  Very long period swell from north and south.  Launched at 7:30 after meeting Rocketman and Slomo and Karl who'd just arrived.  Went out to "site 33", out in the bay,  where there is some structure.  First drop, smallish blue, second drop, 27" ling.  Using iron with flouro skirt, hook at top, with shrimp fly teaser,m squid strips.   It slowed down, but I got about 6 blues, some on doubles, a couple of the doubles were back to back.  Just big enough to keep.  I got another take down from what seemed like a ling (elevator behavior), but it got off. Then I trolled for about 15 mins with my Walleye runner on 3 way, trying to keep it down, but I know it was lifting, and got 3 nice Olives, 17-18".  I rarely get a bite from those big olives when I'm drift fishing.   Looking for another ling, I hooked a couple small rockies and spent a half hour getting them descended.  I need a heavier weight on that thing.  It was getting close to noon and I figured I wasn't going to see another ling, and tho I was curious what moving into the kelp might do, I called it.    The parking was full up, never seen it so busy during the week.  As usual, I just rolled my yak back to the full coastal access lot rather than risk fender benders.
Last week, same area, could hardly fish because of all the wind.  Too bad the Central Valley has to fry for the wind to die on the coast.

On july 4th, I took a friend (newbie) to SW. After paying the toll and arriving at SW , the entrance was blocked. Security guards told me the area was closed for party. I turned back and had no chance of launching. Then I kindly asked for refund. He said the policy gives no refund when a ticket was issued.  :smt013 It wasted us ~30 minutes and $10 ticket due to the "trap" Pebble Beach set up.  :smt010

They used to "credit back" the amount spent at gate, w/receipt, when you'd spend in any of P.B.'s
business. Tap Room, mostly... or the General Store. Has this changed?

To add insult to your 7/4 injury, I posted on 7/3 evening that I saw a sign at the launch saying it would be closed on 7/4.

At the time, I thought that was nice to have a sign, but that it would have been a lot better to have it on the Pebble Beach website under Events, where I look when I'm thinking of going there.   There's a guard at the Monterey gate most times who is an older man, speaks with an accent, who is very friendly.  I'll have to ask his phone # or ask him who would know when the launch will be closed - I've had the Dockmaster at the Beach Club , another friendly older man (So am I. Older, I mean) tell me that the launch will be closed a few days ahead of time, maybe we could get his number,  I'll bet he has one.

By the way, the ling I got had an octupus in it's belly.  I've seen that a few times. I need to make a lure with a longer, thicker reddish skirt.

Good job, FT.  Let's have some pics of the disection of the ling's stomach!   :smt003

I've found abalone in a cab's stomach more than a couple of times - maybe I should make an ab jig!   :smt001

I was thinking the same thing as I have seen many lings barf up octopi (plural sp?) at the side of the boat.  I had an old rainbow trout colored tube bait about 12 inches long and took it out on my last outing.  Caught 2 keeper lings on it in less than an hour.  Check out the post in the reports for a picture at the end of the thread.  I think it is on page three at this point.  I'm looking for more and/or similar baits on line, will let you know if I find some.  late....

Hey Eric,

funny you mentioned that, I deep hooked a china last time out and found three baby abs in it's stomache around 1 inch long or so.  I guess you could just beat some shape into a quarter and drill some holes in it for split rings then paint it red.  How would you fish it though?  I guess dead sticking it and move it maybe an inch an hour would be most realistic........ :smt002

maybe I'll just stick with the octopus idea....... :smt001

Here is what it looked like. This is Tom floating on glass!!!
A big thank you to Tom for showing Walker and me the way to "site 33." It was a fun day with fish too. Also nice to meet and talk story with Karl who came all the way from Nevada, now this guy has had an interesting life. It was such a relaxing day that by the end my wife asked if she could drop a line and just try it for a minute or two, and of course she got hooked up with something that she lost just out of sight. She might just be hooked! I wonder how that will effect the WAF.

Guards at the gate did not know Pebble Beach was closed. Guards at SW entrance blocked the road and knew the closure hours ago. These two guards worked for different companies and they did not communicate each other. The guard who issued the ticket to me saw our return (with kayaks on the roof) in ~30 minutes. He refused to refund.

not advocating violence or anything, but technically, can they close a PUBLIC access?  I can see them closing the private wharf, but the beach?  What would keep them from having a 'party' every weekend to keep the riff raff (me) out?  And assuming they cant close it, what if you try and a private company stops you?

You could launch at another point close by, and then paddle into the beach and see what happans. I don't know if there are any close launching points but its an idea.
