I'm taking a buddy kayak fishing and ab diving sat.  The wind should be ok in the AM 5-15 and the swell is 2-5.  The Fort should be fine.  We will launch about 7AM and paddle down to pidotti reef and get abs then fish.  The more the merrier.

I may be joinin in on the hunt, if the local Hurricane is blowin down here.
Hope it doesn't!.....I'm trying to catch me some waves :smt002
When I was there last year, I saw some locals catching some waves in a little cove just south of the launch area. Do you guys see surfers there frequently?
I know there are spots/parks along the sonoma coastline that get crowded on the weekends, but some secret breaks would be sweeter!

That break is called Mystos (or Peddotti (sp?) reef).  It breaks only on an incoming to high tide with a south swell.  If the tide's too low, you drag bottom on the inside.

There's a break on the north side of point that forms Fort Ross cove.....don't know if it has a name.  It can't take any wind.

All the way up on the north side of Salt Point park is a great break called "secrets."  Unfortunately, the "secret" got out a long time ago.  Around Highway marker 44 (i think).  I think it's called horseshoe cove on the map.  Takes a south wind (or no wind).

thanks for the local knowledge and thier favorable conditions Dave! the Mystos spot did look a little short-lived and once-in-a-while'ish.

Newbie question here; are the conditions at Ft Ross significantly flatter than those along the rest of the coast?
It looks like a it's a protected cove?

I'll jump in and say YES!  it is a protected cove and launch spot. I've only been there once and it was swell=5ft@11sec   wind picked up in the afternoon.

pic1~ lookin down to the launch, from the walk-back-up-to-park your car area.

pic2~ looking back towards the launch from the cove.

pic3~ the SWEET-oilyglass we were stuck with.

Yes it can be significantly calmer when the swell and/or wind are in your favor. I have launched in flat "greasy" conditions only to find many hours later the swell had shifted from the NW to SW. One fateful day I rode an eight foot breaking wave all the way to the beach where I then planted the nose of my kayak (fiberglass dive board) in the sand and was catapulted up the beach in front of a horde of tourists, fortunately  damaging only my pride.
For years we have been launching at The Fort and even to this day I keep a watchful eye on the changing conditions.     Hope to see you there..........

Swell forecast is coming up - I may only do a shore dive. Good luck to all!
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

If anyone is driving the Hwy 37 corridor keep in mind it is a race weekend at Infinion. Traffic is always a nightmare.
