Hey Everybody,

Planned a halibut fishing get together w/ my buddies (8 of us) on Berkeley Pier.  Live anchovies on a carolina rig was the ticket.  We caught three keepers (25, 25, & 24 inches) around 7-8am during a pretty decent tide (I got two of them  :smt003).  The fish are still biting but has slowed down a bit and the fish seem to be holding a little further out than in the beginning of May.  Saw a couple other keeper flatties also taken as well as some A-holes keeping some shakers too  :smt013(where's DFG when you need them).  Two very nice stripers were caught on live bait as well.  Fished till 3pm and called it a day.

Additionally, I've been tossing lures at ARW every other day after work for nothing.  From what I hear and can tell, it's slowed down a lot over there.  Good luck and take care.

Nice! I need to get down there and fish that pier. I used to fish it all the time.

Hell, I USED TO fish all the time, period. Working 10 hours a day six and seven days a week has put a major damper on that, though.  :smt010

But I digress...

Scored two flatties off the pier - nice job!   :smt001

Walk up to those poachers with your camera rolling video and ask if you can snap a few shots of their fish - when they get mean and nasty you can back off, and if you don't have a little light that gives away your filming you'll have caught them showing how guilty they are.  But don't put yourself in harm's way...

Nice job. I've yet to get a flattie this year. I can't understand why anyone would keep a short one. There is no way you could get more than a pound of meat off one. I second the cal tip hot line for reporting poachers. If we don't there will be nothing left for our kids.

It's an endless debate on the pierfishing board. Calling Caltip is usually a waste of air. If they do ever show up the evidence is long gone. In previous years there have been people camped out there and handing off their catch to "runners" who come by and pick it up every once in a while.

On the plus side the DFG does do regular walks of the pier and they're pretty thorough when they do. I also (personally) think calling Caltip is good even if you know the actual miscreants won't get caught, because at least it lets the DFG know there's a problem.

Strong work Surf Fisher!

Thanks.  Yeah, I've wanted to talk to DFG about it (I have in the past and they are well informed about the poaching there) but didn't want to look obvious.  Some of those Berkeley piers regulars look like they've done some time already and wouldn't mind going back if you catch my drift, thus pissing them off would just ruin my day of fishing.  I want DFG to start accepting text messages (I told them that and they agreed it would be a good idea).  I would have no problem at all shooting them a message if I could do it in silent.
