With the terrible plankton bloom happening down Salt Point way, vis < 3 ft. , JZumi and I headed north for colder clearer water.  We were treated to 10-15 ft vis off Albion, calm water and a hot shower after a few hours of diving.  We paddled about a mile north of Albion.  I took 2 nice scallops, 1 Fat 9" ab and shot a half dozen fish including 1 3 lb red.  Bloom hasn't really hit to hard up north yet so if you are thinking about jumping in I would head north.  Be safe out there.

Dave, thanks for the tip.  Did you guys pay the launch fee in Albion?

Yeah we paid a day use fee of $10.  They were happy to see some divers.  I think it has been pretty slow up there and they are expecting a tough year with all the restrictions.

Hey Dave,
I've been diving for snails for 3 years now around sanoma and mendocino. I recently saw a diving DVD where the guy was going after scallops. How do you learn to look for them and what should l be looking for? Are they in and around the ab's?  What is the limit on them? Thanks for any tips you could provide. Mike

Hi Yakers;

       Look for the orange lip. In San Diego, I would find them on Bridge
Pilings like Ingram by Sea World. I use a Ab Iron and a net bag to catch
them as the fall from the Pilings.

Sorry for the slow reply Mike.  I have been traveling a lot.  I usually use a flashlight and look for the lips like Ernie says.  I find them in cracks, bowls and undercuts.  Usually a little deeper up north 30-50 ft.  You can find them in 10 ft of water in S. Cal.  The rocks have a certain look with the right color of orange or yellowish stuff growing on them and anemonies too.  The limit is 10 and there is no size limit.  If you cut the meat in half trying to get it out of the shell, unfortunately, each half counts as a scallop, so be careful.  I find a flashlight really helpful to see the bright orange lips.  Good luck.
