dropped my kayak today and the rudder hit first :smt009

the whole bracket moved over to the right, and the plastic bulged around the left side.  While checking it out, I was able to push it back into place.

Question:  obviously that weakened the plastic but if it doenst leak, is it a huge issue?  If it is a huge issue, can I just weld a piece of plastic over the spot and still use the rudder?

did I kill my yak? :smt010

Did you get any info on repairs.  I was talking to the guy at Outback and mentioned that someone had posted about damage from a drop on the rudder.  He said he has repaired them with his heat gun.  He has to heat the plastic enough for it to reform/bond to the metal inserts.  Said it was hard to get the inserts to be as tight has the original state however.  Just thought I'd pass the info along.

thanks for the info, no replies about this fix.

Probably best to take it to the pros for this one.

for the next klutz like me, a final report.  Went to Kayak Connection in SC and they looked it over and recommended I just goop the hell out of it.  I decided to remove the rudder, gooped it up well, and she is not leaking.  I probably will not put the rudder back on as the torque from the rudder would be a lot to ask the goop to stand up to.

the kayak folks said that getting a good weld in such a small area is tough.

So I now have an extra rudder for the future but the tarpon lives to fish another day.

Wish ya had some pics to share. It is easier to get good info if you can show someone exactly what you are taling about.
Using a heat gun on a kayak is tough. You can make the part you are heating up too thin if you are not careful.
