Our Nanny has been offering to watch the newborn so my girlfriend and I could fish like we did in the recent past. We finally felt comfortable enough to leave our daughter long term and headed for some prime shore line after work.

Combined gear into the truck and headed out about 5:00pm.

Within 5 minutes of the squid soaking I had a decent take down. Typical bat ray pull and it was welcomed. After a pathetic fight, one small run, it came in like a safeway bag. It was just under 20lb class. Though this is good practice for the mud marlin derby coming up, this was no contender.

I had Shan fishing a casting setup 100% of the time for the very first time. This is a dream come true. A hardcore fisherwomen who I am madly in love with fishing like a pro... no coffee grinder and over exerted cranking. Well I am proud to say she did well. She isnt power casting yet, but she's gotten over the back lashing. She sets her brake, works her drag and places the clicker to on. This is more work than setting the spinner down and flipping the bait runner switch. It brought a tear to my eye!

Well, after a hour more of soaking bait and me only getting a few taps, she asked me to cast her rod out a bit further. I obliged and power casted the weight and rig right into the drink. I figured it was a fluke and the knot may have been old. So we re-rig it... once again a tear shed. She is self sufficient now. She tied the slider bead and swivel using a uni knot and made a 60lb sturgeon leader tied in mono with two surgeon loops. Even baits her own rigs.

Well I power cast and it is a repeat. Pissed at the line on the reel I switch reels to my backup, cause that is how I roll and quickly rig the braided line in the same fashion. Long story short, the line snaps and I am down three rigs!

The good news: I figured out it was the tip guide. The ceramic insert was cracked and cutting the lines. The bad news: The rod slipped out of my hands and hit the rocks like a ninjas sword and busted out two guide inserts.

I think the g-dude rod is officially retired. Maybe convert it to a gaff!

Making the best of our time, we escaped the wind, spent some quality time and took photos. Fishing one rod sucks for two!

The cute fisher couple.

Since we hadn't had any other hits that stuck, I figured go big or go home. Going for the hail mary, I slapped on some serious bait. Giant squid head with two fat Owner Z bend 7/0s hanging out.

As we waited, we saw a killer sunset with so many colors as we watched the SF planes coming in a kite boarders bail.

After some serious nibbles on the mega bait soaking, we pulled it in for a quick check and recast. This is what we found.

Man the little guys chomped the snot out of it. So in the end, only one fish caught, but we got some much needed quality time. It was a great day on the shore line. Felt like we were high school kids again.

Note to self: purchase 2-piece 7 foot back up rod to stay in the truck. Fishing one rod for two sucks.
