I have a fish and dive and I love it.  I also purchased a motor mount from cobra.  I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure I'll love it.  Don't buy one thought, there easy to make.  I can send you a picture and measurements of the mount and you can save a hundred dollars if you like.  Good luck.  I have to say also that I love the self sufficiency aspect of kayak fishing and would prefer to use the trolling motor only when specific applications call for it.  Andres

If you put a trolling motor on your kayak, don't you have to register the boat with the state, display a CA number on the hull, and pay fees?

I think CA DMV requires boat registration only if the motor is greater than 1.5 hp

Any watercraft that is motor driven must be registered witht he DMV in CA.

I have powered my Tarpon 140 with both a electric trolling motor and a 2 stroke, 13 lb Gamefisher outboard in the past.

I stand corrected!  Any motorized kayak is supposed to be registered.  From the DMV web site:

What Vessels Must be Registered?

Generally, every sail-powered vessel over eight feet in length and every motor-driven vessel (regardless of length) that is not documented by the U.S. Coast Guard which is used or on the waters of this state are subject to registration by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The following vessels do not have to be registered in California:
  • Vessels propelled solely by oars or paddles.
  • Non-motorized sailboats that are eight feet or less in length.
  • Non-motorized surfboards propelled by a sail and with a mast that the operator must hold upright.
    A ship’s lifeboat (a dinghy is not a lifeboat).
  • Vessels currently and lawfully numbered (registered) by another state that are principally used outside California.
  • Vessels brought into California for racing purposes only (exempted only during races and tune-ups).

My brother has a Cobra F&D with a trolling motor.  It works great!!!  We usually paddle around the lake fishing.  Then when we are done, he throws a line to me, we crack a couple of beers (illegal), and he motors us home. It makes for a great day fishing when you don't have to paddle back.  Yes, you are supposed to register the yak if it has a motor.  But, most of your LE types don't know that.  Those that do would ,probably, only cite you if your attitude waranted it (contempt of cop).  I have my canoe registered w/ the CF numbers and everything.  I think it costs me $10.00 every other year. So, not a big deal to register it if you want to keep it legal.

Heck, if you think about it, technically even my Hobie would require registration if I ran it with the optional sail!!!!   I don't think so!!!   :thumbdown
