After my spill today on the river, it is time to get some leashes. For those of who that use them, do they get in the way while paddling or fishing. I see them that clip on the yak or around your wrist. I figure it's out there I just have to find it, but if you have a nice strap that goes around your wrist with a small hook then the cord that goes to the paddle or rod you can detach from your wrist and hook it on the yak when not in use.

I'd be leery of attaching a paddle to my wrist.  In the event that you do go over, I'd think that a paddle floating downstream with current pulling on it while you're trying to get back to, and on, your yak, wouldn't be the best scenario.  I think attaching it to the yak, and only the yak, is the best way to go.  For what it's worth, I don't know that I've ever heard of anybody attaching a paddle to their wrist.

Stay safe out there bro!

Michael

Exactly...leash it to the yak.  Don't tether yourself to anything in moving water.

For a real thrill, try one of the CrateMate Jr.'s, which comes with three mini leashes for the rods, net, or whatever will fit into the rocket launchers. Add a paddle leash, a rod leash for the one that's not behind the crate, straps for your Tilley, Crokies for your glasses, and start the yard sale. You've really got to have the leashes if you want to hang onto your stuff, but, man, they can make you pay for it in other ways when you're trying to untangle yourself to get back into the boat. DAMHIKT.

JeffreyM,

I have a coiled paddle leash (Scotty), it has a velcro strip that attached tightly to the center of my paddle, then clips to one of the hull mounted cleats. I have full range of paddle stroke. It does not interfere with paddling at all...

Still use these but I have upgraded to a different safety landyard for my paddle.

I don't know the first thing about river paddling but I would be a bit worried about having a paddle leash on in swift water. It seems like a good way to get tangled up in something at the worst possible time. I unleash my paddle when landing in the surf just for this reason. Maybe get a cheap spare paddle instead?
