well i met up with AlohaDan for a try at kona trolling.

short report- SKUNKED!  So, my quest for Ono from yak continues.

Longer-
I rented a prowler 13 angler from P&P kayaks, used my now portable Matrix17 (steve's custom portable kit available soon), water was beautiful, warm, flat, and nearly windless until late. We trolled "whale" opelu out to the 400foot mark (which is like 20 feet from the beach, jk- its like 1 mile) from Keahou.
Pic is from later in day when wind was starting to come up.
I gave AlohaDan some salmon gear-- flashers and the like, which he used to score 5 Ono strikes the next day. have to add that to the bag next time.

I did "whip" from shore a few times- for a bunch of little "rockfish" looking things- mostly these aggressive little black with purple polka dot bass- nearly all on either white swimbaits, or silver rattletraps. Managed to get broken off deep into my spectra on Mother's day- casting a swimbait to a big shadow at gray:30 in the morning. No idea what that was.

Ah, yakking in the ocean w/o a wetsuit - that does sound fun!  Thanks for the report and good luck.   :smt001

Heyyyy, I was staying at a vacation rental in Keahou last week. I thought I saw a few fishing yaks off the deck!

We charted a boat and went after Ono. Missed one that (apparently) fought like an Ono, and hooked into a large shark. I have to be honest, after fighting that shark, the thought of trolling opelu in a kayak out there gives me The Fear! (the boat was only a mile or so offshore).

I wrote a report here (I won't paste it all in so the thread isn't hijacked).

That's hilarious--

Dan showed me a good sized bite mark on his Hobie- about 14" in diameter - where he was "hit".  he's been tagged twice in 2.5 years. apparently those tigers have an interested in tupperware, but they don't come back for more.

I guess plastic must taste a bit like turtle shell!
