This was the first time we have been to the Consumnes River Preserve.  The walk to the launch is pretty short (about 150 yards) but a set of wheels will be appreciated next time.  Paddling this section of the delta is a real treat, it feels like it was never tamed.  the water was very murky and full of downed trees.  We were there at super low tide and had to walk the boats in some sections in order to get to a larger channel.  Once at a bigger channel, we went upstream towards an old bridge with some nice pilings to fish around.  There were many fish jumping and chasing minnows, but they weren't very interested in what I was throwing.

Eventually I managed to catch a small striper in a section of fast water.

This is a place I will go back to for sure (its very fishy AND beautiful), but I don't think its worth a trip with more than at least 2 hours of water time.  What I am told is that they will lock the gates shortly after dark, and I know people who have had their cars broken into, so dont take anything extra or leave anything pricey laying about in the car...

I've been to the CRP many times over the years. It's a hidden jewel in the delta.

The launch is much improved. The old one was a section of wet, muddy, slimy carpet on the bank. We would get in the kayaks and slide down into the water. That wasn't bad, but getting out was a challenge.

Thanks for the report.

Sounds like a nice spot...I'll have to head over there sometime soon.  Can you give me directions from I-5, heading north from Stockton??  Thanks.

I think we may go back this next weekend, but those big bass that Hobieblue is catching are awful tempting...

Rockfish-
Thanks for the report.  I love CRP even just for a paddle day with the wife/kids.  It's got great views even without a fishing pole.  When they would allow evening paddles it ws fantastic to see the wildlife - especially the bats coming out.  Let me know when you go.  I live about 10 minutes from there and can make a quick trip out there.  Thanks again.
