Hey Abking, I'm thinking of fishing the cape on the opening weekend (May 3, I think).  Probably stay one night at the Mattole campground.  If you're interested, let me know.  Or anyone else.  Weather permitting.  Long live the king.

Dave-

Bring a spear.... I may be wrong but I think that the general Rockcod season opens up that way in June. Pigeon Point and South opens in May.

Freddie, thanks for the concern, but it does open up there on May 1.  I will bring my gun too, but I really want to fish.

Dave:  I'm so wanting to get in and fish from my yak again.  I'll actually be in Monterey for business on May 1st and 2nd, then I have to get home Friday night late because we're having an on-the-water memorial service for my Dad on May 3rd at Trinidad.  Followed by a BBQ/potluck at Merriman's beach house at Moonstone Beach through the evening.  If the weekend has some fishable water I hope to get up early and fish the Cape on Sunday, May 4th.  If you can play it by ear I'd recommend it, because it has to be an excellent day to fish out there.  I wait for "variable wind" and swells less than 6', but you can do it if it's a little off of that.  Be careful!

I'd be glad to show you the Fish Bay area if the wind prevents fishing offshore.  There're some great pockets of old-growth abs and fish to be had too.

Thanks for asking, Dave, and I hope we can get together that Sunday or at some point later this year.

Regarding the regs, the rockfish and lingcod season opens for boats north of the 40.10 line on May 1st - that line is somewhere a few miles north of Shelter Cove.

You guys are lucky then. I'm forgetting how far up North you guys are. I'm not too thrilled about the opener south of Pigeon... just waiting for north of Pigeon to open up.

Tight lines,

Freddie
