I did a couple hours in the evening both days this weekend. cold and windy, but it's a small lake so no worries. saturday hooked a mean little trout. on sunday all I got was a hand-sized crappie on my way to the south end, but I had kind of been looking forward to some bycatch, always makes it more interesting. came on the charteuse/pink grub with a power-egg 'head'.

GB2, maybe I should have been using a down rigger? water is definitely warmer, but I don't have a thermometer. I saw a coastside report a guy hooked a bunch 25 OTW, which seems deep to me, I have been trolling in water that is barely that deep, lures probably about 10 feet down, but sometimes I let it sink that deep. My other issue might have been using more grubs/plastic than crawlers this time around.

I was thinking most of the planted fish are gone, but right as the sun was going down, fish start jumping all around me, in 50 feet of water, and I troll through them and dive-bombing terns for nothing. maybe I was too shallow earlier, and too deep later, but I didn't want to stop and re-tie. should have had a third rod with a bubble and hook, ready to deploy for those jumpers, or something.

Fishing always keeps you guessing and it's been good warming up the kayak for May 1.

abking, new camera has not arrived yet,  :smt003.

That's OK, John.  The imagery in your writing was just enough to keep me from whining about it this time!   :smt002  Thanks for the report.

There was a guy on shore, with a super telephoto shooting the tern action. There were at least four, they seem to chase each other as much as the fish. I have seen even pelicans do the "roll-over turn, look down at the water while upside-down" move, but the terns really do it well.  They aren't quite big enough to eat a large or even medium planter, not sure if they just go for the small ones, or whether  shad are forced up, or what. curious about that one.

I've usually had luck at SCR just trolling an 1/8th oz. gold Little Cleo about 100 feet behind me. In fact I cast the lure from the dam face for about an hour this morning (Monday) and pulled in four trout.

Did they just stock the lake recently?

A lot of things do work pretty well! but that guy from coastside with the downriggers had some good numbers.

I like to use a single barbless hook so I can take my kids out there with less worries, but a lot of things do work. I think that morning and evening they are on top, but during the day I think you had to be deeper.

No idea of the actual stocking schedule. what is on the website and what really happens seem to be pretty different things.

John -

One of things I noticed with the SNG-PBG combo was that the SNG was really bouyant so in order to get it to the right depth, I ran it off the downrigger. I still am experimenting with different combos of tungsten beads to get it to suspend at different depths. I am testing the combos in our community pool in the next 2 weeks. My thinking is that if you could troll it without having to use an in-line weight or downrigger, that would be ideal. Will post the results. Hopefully won't hook any toddlers.  :smt005  BTW, I think a scaled down version would be a killer against suspended crappie. Bummmer they drained Lex.

GB2,

I think you should stick with the downrigger or a trolling weight for these things.

you might be fighting the basic principles of the SNG there,  :smt002. if using a SNG, I think you should just go for a floating config, else you might as well use a metal spinner blade, right?

they have a lot of drag which is worse than the buoyancy as far as keeping them down there.

I like the float because it helps prevent snags. I use 2 big split shot on a swivel as my trolling weight. probably between 0.5 and 0.25 oz?

I could see a tungsten bead to get a super slow float and run it off the downrigger tho. that makes sense to me.

btw, I took my SNGNBNG and replaced the SNGNB with a power egg. crappie hit it yesterday. they like the little grubs.

the important part tho, is to have fun with lure frankensteining,  :smt001

I'm on stand by, for the final product. After you two get this SNG-PBG thing DIALED IN? .....and it's SOOO close to a patient, I just might be able to catch A trout on a consistant bassis.(or when I want to anyways!)
I've already printed pics, but the fine-tunning continues and it's hard to keep up with all the "weights&measures" :smt003

Adam, without a doubt, a threaded nightcrawler behind a dodger is the unbeatable combo for the most action. But it's fun to try to beat it,  :smt001
