I've been looking for a headlamp with a red LED for about a year now. Everything I found with a red LED was either pricy (it's tactical!!) or wasn't a headlamp.

Voila - I found an $11 Ray-o-vac headlamp at Fry's this week. Dual Red LEDs, a single white LED, and a Halogen bulb. The first light to come on is the Red LED, so somebody was thinking. Look in the flashlight section, and its hanging in one of those confounded plastic packages. Blue cardboard and about 4"x8".

This is just the ticket for fishing at night, as you really don't want to mess up your night vision, and fish can be put off by moving lights. Red light doesn't penetrate water very far, so is much less likely to bother the fish.

Regards,
Scott

I have used a similar headlamp for night hiking on lava fields in Hawaii. Works great, and a lot lighter than the standard headlamps. The batteries last much longer with the LED bulbs, too.

Costco has a nice one for $20 I don't know if the red comes on first though
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I picked up one, as a backup, from the Fry's in Fremont. The current one I use (from REI) works great BUT the battery chamber is a bit cheesy. Once in a while the lid doesn't close securely and the batteries pop out.

For $11, I picked up a second one too. For the wife ;)
