I think they are doing to try and simulate spring run off to push the salmon smolt out of the river system. Once they think the smolt are gone they will pump the rest of the water south. :smt013

The high flows also help move sediment down the river system.

NICE its about time they kick the water Level up, last weekend I ended up hitting bottom all over the river even in the (deepest)shallow areas.A couple areas I almost had to get out and walk up by Sailor Bar and right below Sunrise. The FF was running an average depth of 1'6"- 3'6" on the trip down.
Really what the American River needs is a good winter storm flushing, well hopefully next year. What I really noticed is over the last couple years the plant growth in the river has exploded. The last ten years of diving the river, I really noticed it was last summer, areas that normally are sand/silt bottoms are now completely filled with this growth. Areas that are usually big cobble stone are starting to fill up with silt etc and the overall bottom is dirty not clean and clear like it use to be.  Heres a pic diving last summer.

looks like the gage was messed up.  it showed 13 feet, so I was expecting to see a lot of water when I went down to the river....what I saw was a rise of about 6 inches...
checking a different gage, it looks like the river is up to about 1200.

still hoping for more water.......
