I shoulda gone divin' but eventhough reports for this area haven't been good I thought I'd give it another try.

Outgoing tide, I stayed too long.

Fished off and a little downstream of China camp in 15 ft of water, 2hr, nothing.
Fished 100yds out from Rat Rock in 8 ft of water, 2hr, one playful bat ray and a 21" striper, (got a whole fish recipe I wanna try).

Great Bat Ray shot, Dale.  Way to give it a try, and the report is appreciated.   :smt001

Hey Matt,

I started out about where you had your sturgeon/striper heartbreak day.

In 2 hrs there with a good tide all I got was one quick rat-a-tat-tat bite,

Striper reports seem to be pretty good on the north west portion of SPB.

China Camp sturgeon reports seem to be nil.

If you go, good luck.

The last time I was out there, I caught two bat rays and a small perch. Hopefully the dino's will be back. Was thinking about going to Montazuma and try there. BTW, is there any way to cook and eat bat rays????

Let's see, I guess I do have allot of experience with bat rays,  Cute, yeah, Evil, I'm not sure, but big, messy, and dangerous I can vouch for,

One of the first bat rays I ever caught was the biggest almost 4 ft across, we were dumb enough to haul it into my Dad's boat where it promptly shit all over everything, that mixed with their natural slime made a mess that I will never forget, Dad wasn't along on that trip and it took allot of hosing and scrubbing before I could take the boat back to him without hearing about it forever.  That was the last time I ever brought a bat ray into a boat.

As for dangerous, I did slide one up onto the rear deck once to get the hook out, as I was fumbling with it trying to get it turned over to see it's mouth I got my hand too close at the same moment it arched up with it's spine and it laid my finger open to the bone.  Not sure what the slime really is but it hurt allot for a long time, however, duct taped 2 fingers together and finished the day of fishing.

As for eating them, I've heard stories but have no experience, and I don't think I'm gonna try it until I have a reliable source.

I once brought a Ray home for a neighbor who wanted one to BBQ (said he had cooked them that way many times) He had me try some and I almost vomited. As I remember it was very oily and just had a nasty after taste.
