Do some ff require a hole in the bottom of the hull for the transducer and some not? If so which ones are which. I need to get a ff soon.

I don't know of anybody cutting a hole in the bottom of their yak for a transducer.  Some people have installed them through a scupper but I am not sure how this works.  I think it depends on the FF and the yak and whether or not that can be done.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT put a hole inthe bottom of your kayak.
There are some kayaks which have a dedicated 'hole' for a transducer.
Unless you have such a kayak then forget about making your own hole.
Several transducers will shoot through the hull of your kayak. This works just fine for what you need.

Are there a few models that seem to do better for kayaks? Do certain brands have certain characteristics? I have bought quality yak, pfd, radio and I have good rod/reel combos but I don't want to spend a lot on the ff. Are the Cuda 168 or 242 reliable models or should I spend a little more?

The 242 is an outstanding unit, and when you figure in the price, it's possibly the best deal going.  Very easy to set up the puck to shoot through the hull of a kayak.

Thanks I think I will probably go with the 242.

For now I'm just putting a ff on my Perception Search 15. If my son gets serious about yak fishing then I may put one on the TARPON 130.
