I have a 3mm Farmer John wetsuit for yak fishing. I'm going ab diving with a friend next month and need a warmer setup. Would a 7mm beaver tail jacket over my 3mm Farmer John be enough (with hood, booties and gloves of course) or would I need 7mm Farmer John also? Dolphin Scuba center has the jackets new on sale for 39.99.

The majority of the time you want your chest area to be thicker going with the 7mm jacket you should be fine.Remember you have not only the 7mm jacket but the 3mm under that.  I have several suits ranging from 2/3/2 up to 7mm Farmer john style. Typically I wear my 3/4/3 while diving and I'm comfortable. Its really up to the person if you are typicaly a person that is always cold the thicker suit is probably your best bet but personally I think that combo will be fine. I notice that whenever I wear my 7mm I always seem to unzip it to let some cold water in otherwise I'm burning up. The other advanages of wearing a thinner suit is that you don't have to carry as much weight..thats always a good thing  Good Luck

Thanks. My son and I both have the 3mm Farmer Johns so I guess I will be picking up two 7mm jackets. We will be diving/yak fishing the weekend of Sept 12 Albion/Elk if anyone wants to join us.
