Monterey Bay Thursday 21st

If work doesn't get me I will be spending Thursday morning at the Monterey/Seaside end of Monterey Bay.  I am looking to paddle a bit and hit a variety of targets.  Both kelp(rockfish and ling?) and a flat area usually full of sand dabs.  Maybe find my first halibut in the shallows in front of this area.  Company welcome.

I have heard a couple times that sand dabs make good ling bait? Anyone ever try this? I know kelp greenlings ( they look like trout) are like candy bait too. Any thoughts or experiences?

I have heard the same thing and hope to give it a test......

Fishing the derby last Sunday I caught about a 13" male greenling that had major toothmarks on the back 3" or so of his tail. Looked like a ling bite and spit incident. I almost pinned him on but then didn't, figuring the little guy had escaped the jaws once so he deserved another chance.  I probably couldn't have gotten a 33 pound ling to beat Alex's halibut anyway. Next time though I'm trying it.

So what makes the greenling so attractive to the big lings? I'm guessing that the greenling has a more slender body and had less spines compared to the blues and black rockfish - which makes it a more ideal fish to swallow whole????

Mooch!  That's what I've always been led to believe.  Kind of makes a good argument for kingfish for ling bait as well.  Slender, no spines, and much shinier than greenling.
