Hey all,
Trying to figure out how to put a set of Yakima Hully Rollers and saddles on my lumber rack.  I scored two sets of Hully Rollers on craigslist last week.  I'll be getting a couple of sets of saddles in the near future.
The "problem" is they are set up for 1" pipe and my rack is 2" pipe and I've never seen any kind of an adapter on the market.  I don't want to mess up the tops of the cross bars because I actually do haul stuff, other than kayaks, on the rack. So, whatever I do will have to sit slightly below the cross bars.  Or, be easily removable. The rollers do have flat brackets on the bottom that have holes in them for carrige bolts. The brackets are not wide enough to just use a "U" bolt around the lumber rack.
I know someone out there has either done this before, or has an idea I haven't thought of.  Otherwise, I'll do the tried and true method of "Grab all your drill bits, the 1/2 " drill, a sixpack of beer, some duct tape, and turn the radio up real loud.

Thanks for the help
Greg

Greg we used these at work to run 1" conduit to 2" water pipe. Maybe you could attach a lenth of 1" pipe to your rack then just loosen and swing it under rack, or remove it. they are SS pretty strong. I have a couple left if you want to try them.

I think it will work AWESOME!  Is there anywhere, locally, where I can get four of them?  I have a stick of 1" gas line in the garage I can use.  If I put them on so the pipe is just below below the height of the cross bars, I won't need to mess with them at all.

You could also just carry the kayak upside down on the lumber rack and throw a towel, pool noodle, or pipe insulation between the rack and the yak.

The conduit clamps worked great.  I don't have any pictures because I haven't bought and installed the saddles yet.  I basically have a Yakima rack over the cross bars of the lumber rack.

I have transported my yak upside down on the bars and it works excellent.  But, I have two yaks to carry.  The space between the side runners on the lumber rack is 50".  With each yak being 28" wide, I have to overlap them.  So, one of them doesn't sit on the bar.  By going with the rollers/saddles it gets the yaks up high enough to sit side-by-side.

The only real concern I have is the rollers causing "oil canning".  I just won't over tighten the straps.  Then I'll take a strap and place it through the scupper holes and around the bars.  Just snug, not tight. That way, if the other straps fail for some reason, I still won't loose the yak on the freeway.

Hey SSG,
just a warning if you end up with the "mako" Yakima saddles DO NOT use the straps they provide that thread into the saddles. I lost a yak on the freeway when my mako saddle strap popped loose from the notch on the saddle.
Theres a thread about it here

In hindsight I should have had a bow tie down. I went to using standard straps around the yakima bar itself (like I had done for many years before I got the fancy saddles) and haven't had any issues since.

WOW!
I had planned on using the landshark saddles, because they're cheaper, and tying down to the crossbar.  I just assumed that's how you tie it down.  I've never used the Yakima stuff before.  If I'd seen tiedowns on the saddles, I would have used them.

Has anyone had any problems with the rollers causing oilcanning?

Yes & no. The trick is, once you have loaded the boat onto the rack, to always use the little stops that prevent the roller from turning. The friction of the rubber roller provides a good grip to keep the yak from moving forwards or backwards, and the strap should be just tight enough to keep the boat from bouncing up & down. Especially on a hot sunny day an over tightened strap could indeed deform the hull, but I don't think the risk is any greater than using a straight bar.

Yep, They were from a guy in Napa.  When I saw the add I called him up immediately.  I still don't have the saddles, but I couldn't let the rollers go.
