I just ran across this on the internet.  I doubt I'd pay the $500 for it, but  I imagine you could strap one on the end of your kayak for a little added insurance againt Mr. Whitey.

Here's the URL for the company, they even have some video footage of someone with one of these things on in the water with a shark.  From the look on his face, I'm not sure he was convinced it was really working.

I built a circuit that replicates the pulses an electric ray makes.  Apearantly that deters sharks from eating them.  I have to put it in a waterproof housing and test it sometime (on a leopard shark).

I think most of the cost of the shark shield is the batteries and waterproof housing (and liability?).  Generating high voltage pulses is easy and cheap.

So judging by the pic, it only works on the shark and not the fish???  (hopefully):smt017

...I'm too lazy to read the link.

It only deters sharks that come within 10-20ft of the thing.  Sharks are more sensitive to electric signals than fish, so they aught to have a more dramatic reacion.  How many fish do we catch within 20ft of the yak anyway?

This device may work for a shark that is just snooping around out of curiosity or going in for a nibble.  However, the GWS usually attack based on visual cues and slam into their prey from below at 30+mph.  The aim is to kill the prey with the initial violent attack and then come back and eat the carcass at a leasurely pace.  I doubt the shark shield would be much use in the Red Triangle.
