I used a borrowed 13.6' european match rod and an abu 5501 set up
for long casting to perch the other day.

was kind of curious about the background of this rod and did some googling.

If you google match rods, it's pretty much like reading greek even tho it's english.
like what is coarse fishing? is a coarse a kind of fish? or is it a type of location?
what about tench or barbel?

well, who knows,  :smt044

I did learn that a 'feeder' is a kind of cage that holds carp bait. they huck the whole
cage out there 100 yards, put the rod in a holder and wait. to catch a carp,  :smt005

and a 'bomb' is just a sinker (shaped a bit like a bank sinker). they also do a lot of float fishing.

seems kind of relevant because in general, they are casting a long way, and using light leaders,
which implies a light action tip, which means it would be fun for perching.

I did come across this link which I found kind of interesting so I pass it on here.

this guy held some casting world records. and he has a lot of pictures for abking.

and yes... this is what you do when you don't have cable, google strange things,  :smt004

have fun,

Yep... carp / match fishing is big business in europe... akin to the bass tourneys in the states.  I know of some custom rod builders in the states that build match rods almost exclusively.

Neil Mackelow's website has lots of fun distance casting tid bits.  The Distance Casting Forum at www.stripersonline.com is also a good board to monitor for discussions about distance casting... mostly from a fishing perspective rather than field casting.

Spend some time on YouTube and you'll find some cool video clips from distance casting tournaments... kind of fun to watch.

I discovered this morning the rod I've been using for surf pearching doesn't cast far at all!  I have a 3/4 oz egg and thismorning I was only able to get maybe 45 -50yds max.  Now the rod is short, 6'6" no name medium action with a shakespear spin reel, and 15lb line.   I was just able to get past the first set of breakers  standing in nut deep  surge.
One tiny hit on a retreive, but no hook ups for bout 1 hour in the surf. Used grubs. Wife on the beach catching up on her rag mags.

erik, I always forget about youtube...  this is a good one for the folks that actually fish.

I did see a question to neil from a guy that wanted to fish for striped bass in california, must have been one of those guys seeing the unreachable boils at ocean beach, SF.
