Trinidad Crabbing opening day report

The Humboldt Crew met at our secret club house in Trinidad for a day of Crabbing. After a quick "safety briefing" we loaded pots with squid jars and hung Salmon Carcasses. We were a sight for sore eyes to all the fisherman wrestling their crafts against a powerful shore surge. The tide was super high and swallowed the whole beach. No problem for a kayak and we launched with ease. The sunrise over the water was absofrickinlutely amazing, worth the trip right there.

We paddled out beyond prisoner rock to the quarter mile buoy and then some. I dropped a collapsible and circular trap spaced close together. You could almost walk back to shore across the buoys without getting your feet wet. We Marked our territory by paddling in a concentric circle for an hour keeping the PB''s outta our AO. We had crab rings baited with rockfish carcass and and I fished a squid filled snare with 4 oz wt that worked great but only caught crablings. The action on the rings was fast and furious. It must look like a writhing crab carpet down there right now. The bad news it was most juvies and dames. The pots produced keepers but it was slow going. stayed out till midday then reloaded the pots for an overnight soak
We had a communal crab feed back at HQ and I sit here gorged on Dungeness and in need of some lipitor after all that melted butter. Not so many pics this outing but you can see the sunrise was like sticky orange tallow.

I really enjoyed reading your report, but, oh man, are you making me "homesick." After seeing your pix, I've GOT to get back to Trinidad soon, fishing or no...but I would welcome local info and company on a fishing trip, too. I'll PM you.

BTW, "absofrickinlutely"? Now that's a descriptor that needs to be included in Merriam-Webster!
