Decided to make the most of a brief window between getting off work and darkness by throwing a little yak in the truck and hitting the estuary - the river's been closed since Saturday due to low flows.  I got down to "Snag Hole" at the end of Fulmor road from the Ferndale side at 5PM.  Got on the water by 5 after and started trolling my gold Little Cleo.  Last night I drove by here after an appointment and saw a big wake heading upstream of the riffle.  The fog was thick this evening.  I paddled around in shorts and a t-shirt, knowing the warmth of my truck awaited after a quickee paddle.  50 degrees is do-able if you're on adrenalin AND have a truck nearby!  The seals were hanging out, so that wasn't encouraging in terms of a hookup...  I worked the upper hole and then a few casts on the tail end of the riffle - then a fish moved up over the riffle.  It made big splashes, so it was no half-pounder.  I moved quickly toward the riffle and tried to paddle upstream, but it turned to a rocky 18" of swift water in the riffle.  I pulled to the small spit between the bottom of the riffle and the main hole and beached it.  This spit is temporary, as this is all tidal area.  The fish had moved up and the seals were still hanging out in the hole below, so I had a beer and appreciated the moment.  At one point I was wondering why I'm out here in 50 degree weather in a t-shirt and wet shorts for a very quick slim chance at a hookup...   I credit NCKA.  :smt001

Eric check out these pics of my Estuary adventure the other day with a guy named Ken from Santa cruz. We paddled around Cock robin Island towards fulmar rd till we ran out of water and had to drag the boats to the water to get back to the main channel to petrazinni. It was a gorgeous day with not a fish in sight.

Right on, Hawk.  Maybe we'll get a chance to do some night crabbing down there in a few weeks...
