I wonder how stable it is.  I sort of doubt any of us SOT kayakers and our 30+" wide yaks have the skill and form to manage that thing.  Although being able to get the salmon grounds in record time is tempting.

my soon-to-be co-worker at Aquan (a surf ski racer) wants me to get into the surf-ski scene... I told him I'd give it a shot.....when they start making the seating area at least 27 inches wide  :smt003

There's this couple that paddles their surf skis at the beach I usually fish. I always talk w/ them about what they're up to paddling around the sound but from what they say it sounds like a real fun time. They cover a lot of ground at high speed (avg. 6+mph) and end up seeing a ton. I think it would be a good way to be in the water and keep in shape when you've got time to do something and not the time to go fishing. Maybe I'm weird to want to just paddle sometimes but sounds like fun. I sure didn't think there'd be such a controversy for paddling for fitness in a kayak fishing forum.

I love paddling for fitness!
I rediscovered this last winter. Now everyone sit down, but here was actually a time when I did not carry fishing gear when I paddled *gasp*
I love my little cobra surf boat, and I think surf skis & wave skis look like a ton of fun.

I found another link to it which is better at showing off it's speed once going and also that you don't need to be redlined and can actually cruise while the foil is working. At top speed though they got it to 16 MPH. DAAAMN!!! :anger

I wonder how much speed you need to get how much lift?  What sort of foil would I need to get me and my Prowler 15 lifted out of the water and cruising.  Race you to the boil!!!

Approximately 10 km/h to start to get lift, another 25% or so to get fully out of the water, and then even more speed, based on the ability of the paddler. They also state that you'd need the equivalent fitness of someone that can do the 500m sprint in 2 minutes. Even in a boat as speedy as a K1, that's pretty fast.

I know some of you guys have seen these things.  Laird Hamilton's foil board. They came up with these things to be able to surf in high wind and big chop.  How sweet would it be to glide your boat a foot over the afternoon slop instead of having to plow through it.
