I'm real interested, but I haven't hunted since I was a kid in Oregon, and never ducks.

Can you get permits for ducks at Don Edwards at any sporting goods shop?  I'm in Fremont, so that sounds real interesting.

You need a valid CA hunting license, or an expired license from another state.  If you do not have proof of taking a Hunter Safety course, you will need to take the 2-day, 16 hour course to get a hunting license.

License = $37.30
CA State Waterfowl Stamp = $16.00
Federal Waterfowl Stamp = $15.00

Most places that sell guns/ammo will have the tags and license.

If you need hunter safety check the DFG's website for a class schedule.  Usually there is a class somewhere in the Bay Area once a month.

Thanks, bro.  I took hunters safety in 6th grade, courtesy the Oregon public school system, but I'll need to redo it since I have no proof.

Since I don't want to take my fathers Wingmaster on the yak I suppose a new shotgun is in order too.

If you have taken hunter saftey but don't have the card, any old hunting license, even if it's 20 years old from Oregon, is all the proof you need to demonstarte that at one time you were a licensed hunter.

My duck gun is vintage 1982 Wingmaster with a 2 3/4" receiver... it's a beater, which is preferred for this time of hunting... salt is brutal on firearms... I slather the shotgun in oil before heading out, and then use the garden hose for initital cleaning when I get home, then a full teardown and more oil...

Eric, as BC stated, the salt water is a killer on shotguns. So, don't go getting a new one. If you are buying one to use for this type of hunting, buy a used one. A good old 870 will do the trick. They take a helluva whipping and just keep on shooting.

Hey Dudes.....dont' forget that in addition to 1) license 2) State duck stamp 3) Fed duck stamp (which, by the way, is not available from "state license sellors" but can only be purchased at the US Post Office).......

Yes....IN ADDITION....you need a HIP-Stamp.
You get it free from the same place you get your license or State Duck Stamp...
....but OFTEN YOU MUST ASK FOR IT.

The "Hip Stamp".....is a declaration that you are aware of and will participate in the migratory bird reporting program.....and if you don't have one Game Officers will cite you.    Repeat:   It is FREE.    It is FREE.   But you gotta have it.

Hey shotgun, I use to put in at Laired park and float down the river with my old coleman crawdad boat.(80's) Pulled the motor and hit some nice ducky spots. I've been meaning to do it in my yak, but more of a fish guy anymore. I use to go down to where the Tuolumne dumps into the San Joaquin, and do some great fishing. Ducks everywhere.. Sometime in the near future we'll have to hook up.

Wow... pretty steep to get all the proper licences and stamps!

I will have to retake the safety course since I've lost my original cert.  Even though I've taken the handgun safety deal several times since then I wouldn't mind the refresher to be honest.  Can't be too safe, imo.

I think I have a Savage single shot 12 guage somewhere that would be perfect.  I'm not afraid to shoot my fathers 870, but it is one of the nicer, older ones that's still very cherry...  It deserves better treatment.

Will be in touch with you guys once I get my paperwork in order to see if I can tag along sometime.

Duck is good.

Years ago, I ponied up for the lifetime hunting license and the lifetime fishing license. Makes it so much easier and cheaper in the long run. Now, all I have to do is send to CWA for my federal stamp when I renew my membership. Never have to go into Big Jive....lol.

There's definitely a growing interest in hunting from a kayak or at least using it as transportation to remote spots.  We just might have to start a new Kayak Hunting Forum.

This is a good idea.  I Bought my kayak for multiple reasons fishing, exercise and hunting not necessarily in that order. I would like to see a hook up section for yak hunting and maybe a dedicated area on the site for hunting discussion. That way I wouldn't have to wade through the fishing threads to find the hunting threads. Anyway just my two pieces of copper.

As noted by another "post-er".....shotguns and water have a hard time together.

My solution (from a long time back) was to buy a single-shot 12-gage for kayak hunting.

Really, it's the only thing that works.    You dump even a simple "pump" action into salt-water and........if you don't strip that gun down to the last pin......it will be junk in weeks.

Single-shots (you can buy them brand-new for $99.99) are...utter...utter simplicity.   You can just take the "action" and dump it in a pot of 100% alcohol.   (100% is "hygroscopic," meaning that it will "take-up" water.  Lesser percentages won't).

After immersing an action in alcohol....let it drip-dry and then immerse it in kerosene.   Allow to drip dry, and then lub specific parts (the firing pin, for example) with machine oil.
