Hello all,

my name is dex from Oakland. Started fishing again seriously since Jan 2026. I  joined as I'm interested in getting a kayak and starting my journey into kayak angling. I have been fishing from San Leandro marina, Emeryville, foster city and and Berkeley. Nice to meet you all!

Hi Dex,

Welcome.... I just moved to San Leandro and I am interested in how you have found the fishing around the Marina?

Went a few weeks ago to have a look and it looked closed but could probably still launch..... does anybody fish for halibut near there?

Thanks

Troy

Hi Dex,

Headwaters Kayak and Wind Toys do demo days, where you can try kayaks before you buy them. Even if you don't buy a brand new kayak it is a good idea to try a few different hull types and propulsion types.

Thanks for the welcome y'all. So Troy San Leandro marina pier for me has seemed to only yielded jacksmelt.so there is a working launch, look up Wes McClure boat launch. Fishing boats are definitely going through there but I have not seen any kayakers. I've have not heard or saw anyone pick up halibut from the shore recently.  I have seen people jigging for stripers as well but I have yet to see anyone catch any prize fish this year when I've been out.

Thanks Fitz for the recommendations! I'll definitely check it out.

I've been scoping out a new Hobie passport 12 ft, basically sub 2k for kayak(exclusive of pfd, VHF,etc). But definitely open to any recommendations.

Did you end up getting the modular?  Or the Passport?  Or other?

I actually ended up with the reelyaks modular(rapido). The wife was a major part of that decision. I've been out now twice with it. Today just hit Alameda Rock wall. So far so good.
