Hi Folks,

When I go on a family vacation and bring my Kayak, I some times need more storage. I was thinking about putting a cargo bag on top of my kayak on the roof, and strapping it down.

Has anyone done this? Or does anyone have other suggestions?

My existing roof rack crossbars are not wide enough to fit a kayak and a hard cargo box. I could buy a different roof rack system. but I'm thinking if I can just put some extra stuff in a cargo bag that sits in the kayak, that would be the easiest (and cheapest) solution.

Best,
Stewart

What kind of vehicle, and how much extra stuff are you trying to bring?  Maybe a hitch mount cargo rack could work.

Could also stuff smaller/lighter objects into the kayak hull. Might make loading/unloading more painful, but if that's what it takes to bring the fishing gear...

I have a narrow older Thule cargo box that I don’t use.
“I’m going fishing.”  They said, “we will go with you.”

Thanks all. I've thought about a hitch mount, but we tend to bring the bikes on vacation as well, and the bike rack is using the hitch mount. It's a full Griswold Family Vacation when we leave town.

I think I'm going to give the cargo bag a shot. I put my kayak on the roof rack right side up (i.e. the bottom of the kayak is on the cross bars), so I'm basically going to fill the hull space with stuff like sleeping bags, pads, clothes, etc. Hopefully the cargo bag will keep stuff relatively dry and dirt free.

I'll let you all know how it goes.

Best,
Stewart
