I went crabbing on a friend's boat.  It is much easier to catch crabs from a boat than from a kayak.
I need to get a boat for crabbing.

You are now experiencing the earliest signs of the boat addiction...

I have been thinking about a used 18' aluminum boat (Hewescraft 180 Sportsman or Stabicraft).  However, before I get a boat, I think I need to get a used truck to tow it.  My Subaru Outback is too small for towing a boat.

I have a Crosstrek, and I use an aluminum trailer to tow my Hobie AI, and it's easy to forget that it's even back there. But, I guess a real boat is a whole different level of towing. The interweb tells me that the "Hewescraft 180" weighs 1200 pounds, and with outboard, fuel, etc., it can top 2000 pounds, which is more than 10x the weight of my AI (not to mention that you'll need a much heavier trailer)...

I might be able to pull the boat, but worried about stopping.  I would like to have approximately 5,000 lbs of towing capacity.  I used have a Toyota Tundra Truck but sold it several years ago.  What a mistake.

I bought a 18' Duckworth a couple of years ago and it's a definitely a game changer for crabbing. It's more family friendly and we usually limit out. I still crab from my kayak when I'm in Oregon but at home it's on the boat. These aluminum boats are relatively light so you don't need a large truck. I towed mine with a jeep wrangler until I bought a jeep grand Cherokee which has a surprisingly high towing capacity, 6,200 lb, if you get one equipped with the tow package. I do like having 4WD in case a ramp is slippery but 2WD works too. The dark side is calling... Paul... Paul... Paul

Get a slip in Noyo or Dolphin Isle so you don't have to tow often.
