The license plate on my AI trailer is peeling apart. I'm tempted to try to glue it back together, as I'm sure that the DMV will charge money to replace it...

That sounds like a defect and they might be willing to give you new one for free if not too old?

Maybe, but there is a slight crack in the metal near where it started peeling, so I’m guessing that they will say that’s the source of the problem.

I'd spray that with some Super 77 and stick it back on.  I'd only replace it if I got a fix-it ticket telling me to do so.  It's $27 to replace plates and their documentation doesn't indicate there's any case where you can have that waived.

Experienced the same peeling with both of my boat trailer plates.

The worse part was that for permanent trailer plates, you have to visit DMV; you cannot do it via internet or by mail.

Cheers!

I wonder if AAA can handle permanent trailer plates to save a DMV trip.

I finally got around to replacing this damaged license plate. It took all of 10 minutes at the Capitola DMV and cost a mere $7. I'm still in shock at how easy-peasy it was (well, except for the fact that I went to the Los Gatos DMV first, and the wait there would have been multiple hours). The minimal cost was also a pleasant surprise.

If you ever need to replace a trailer license plate, fill out this form (REG 156):

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/file/application-for-replacement-plates-stickers-documents-reg-156-pdf/

Fill in license plate number, VIN number (of the trailer), Section 1 (name, address, etc.), check "license plate" in Section 2, check appropriate box in first row of Section 3 ("Destroyed/Mutilated" in my case), sign/date at the bottom of the first page, and then print it and take it to the DMV.

               Yep
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

problem solvd?

At $39.95/month, I could replace my license plate 5x every month and still be ahead...

Years ago, had to replace the trailer plate.   Person at window next to me was getting a car replacement tag for a stolen one.   Cost less for the new trailer plate and sticker than the car sticker alone.   Surprised.
